Great Snacks, Thoughtful Packaging
At Chio, we're passionate about creating delicious snacks that bring people together. Whether you're sharing with friends, enjoying a movie night, or treating yourself, we want every Chio moment to be full of flavour and enjoyment.
Our packaging plays an important role in making that happen. It helps keep our snacks fresh, protects their quality, and ensures they reach you ready to enjoy.
At the same time, we're continuously looking for ways to improve our packaging and make more efficient use of resources.
How We're Improving Our Packaging
Keeping snacks fresh and tasty requires packaging that performs well. That's why we carefully balance product protection, food safety and quality with ongoing efforts to improve our packaging.
Our work focuses on three key areas:
Reducing Material Use
Sometimes small changes can make a big difference. Our packaging experts are constantly exploring ways to reduce packaging material where possible by making packs lighter, while maintaining the high quality and freshness you expect from Chio.
Improving Packaging Design for Recycling
We are continuously reviewing and developing our packaging to support collection, sorting and recycling of packaging where suitable systems are available.
This includes:
- Following recognised packaging design guidance and industry initiatives, such as CEFLEX, as well as relevant national programmes and partnerships.
- Exploring alternative packaging solutions that support recyclability while maintaining product quality and food safety.
- Reducing the use of printing inks where technically feasible, which may support recycling processes and can contribute to lower resource use during packaging production.
Supporting Circular Solutions
We continue to focus on using recyclable materials where possible. We do this within a fragmented collection and sorting infrastructure, which is why we engage partnerships along the supply chain who will help us to close the loop.
Because recycling systems vary from one region to another, recycling outcomes depend on local infrastructure and consumer participation.
Our Progress So Far
Across the Intersnack Group, we have been working to reduce packaging materials and improve packaging performance.
Using 2023 as a baseline, we concluded on the next results by 2025:
- A 44% ink coverage reduction, from initial 210% to an average of 166%
- A reduction of the average no of colours on the foils, from initial 7.49 to current 6.8
